2011-2012 WYO New Member Audition Requirements
The following audition requirements are for musicians who wish to join WYO for the first time and for String Orchestra members who wish to move to the Symphony Orchestra.

All auditions will be held in Ewell Hall on the William & Mary campus. To schedule an audition time please call Sarah Glosson at 757-345-8215 or email manager@wyomusic.org, then print and fill out the application form at the bottom of the page, and bring it with you to your audition.


The String Orchestra

About the String Orchestra
String Orchestra students are motivated and serious about improving their music skills. They have basic sight-reading skills and are able to play first and third positions comfortably. Ms. Sitzler helps students to develop ensemble skills in a disciplined rehearsal setting. Posture, position and technique are emphasized. Students in the string orchestra program participate in one of three categories, based on age and performance level:

String Orchestra Audition Requirements

Applicants applying for Sinfionetta Strings must prepare a 3-minute piece that they feel best demonstrates their ability and the following two-octave major scales: C, G, D, and A.

Students wishing to be considered for Concert Strings must also prepare F and B-flat major scales (two octaves). All auditions will include sight-reading.

Students who exhibit a level of sight-reading and maturity of sound will be considered for Chamber Strings.

About the Symphony Orchestra
The Symphony Orchestra is the only full orchestra experience available for students in the Williamsburg area. The string, woodwind, brass and percussion players in the orchestra perform works from the standard youth orchestra repertoire, such as Dvorak's Symphony No. 8, Berlioz' Hungarian March, and Saint-Saens' Danse Macabre. Students receive coaching from professional musicians during frequent sectionals. Winners of the Symphony Orchestra's annual Concerto Competition are featured soloist at the Spring Concert.

Symphony Orchestra Audition Requirements

  1. Prepared Piece of your choice (no more than 3 min.; one long excerpt or two shorter contrasting excerpts) from a standard concerto, sonata, or etude (study) of your choice. Orchestral excerpts accepted. Percussionists should prepare two short excerpts/rudiments on at least two of the following: snare drum, timpani, and a mallet instrument (Instruments will be provided).

  2. Prepared Scale of your choice. You may use a major OR melodic minor scale but must play both ascending AND descending formats, using the following guidelines:

    Woodwinds & Brass: Scale should be in two octaves (except where range is prohibitive) in eighth notes at quarter note = 100 in the following manner: 2 notes slurred + 2 notes tongued when ascending, repeat the tonic, and 4 notes slurred when descending.

    Strings: Scale should be in three octaves except two for basses. Scale should be prepared in quarter notes at quarter note = 120 in the following manner: 2 notes slurred + 2 notes martelé when ascending, repeat the top note, and 4 notes slurred when descending.

  3. Sight-reading Excerpt

    All auditionees: Please bring a copy, as well as the original, of your prepared music selection.
