WYO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
2010 Concerto Competition

Each winter WYO holds a concerto competition, open to all Symphony Orchestra members.  Participants perform by memory with piano accompaniment in a recital open to the public. One or more winners may be selected to perform with the Symphony Orchestra at the Spring WYO concert.

1. Application Form:

The form linked to at the bottom of the page must be submitted to the WYO Manager on or before November 23, 2009.

2. Eligibility:

Candidate must:

• Be a performing member of the WYO Symphony Orchestra for the full 2009-2010 season
• Be available to perform the work with the WYO Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, May 2, 2010
• Not have won the WYO Concerto Competition in the 2008-2009 season.

3. Composition Guidelines:

The selected work must be:

• One movement of a work for a solo instrument and orchestra. Double concertos are acceptable if both soloists meet the eligibility criteria above.
• Approved by the WYO Music Director immediately after the application deadline.

4. Competition Requirements:

Each candidate will receive 15 minutes of performance time and must:

• Prepare the movement they wish to perform with WYO.
• Make appropriate cuts if the work exceeds 15 minutes.
• Provide an accompanist. You are responsible for finding your own and will be disqualified if you do not have one at the competition.
• Submit 3 copies of the score (full scores preferred, but piano reductions accepted) to the WYO Manager on or before Monday, January 11, 2010.
• Memorization is required for the competition, which is also a concert open to the public.

5. Judging:

The judges will deliberate immediately following the competition and announce up to three winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd). They will also determine which of the winners demonstrated the necessary level of maturity and proficiency to perform with the WYO Symphony Orchestra at the Spring Concert.
