WYO Audition Requirements

Audition requirements for WYO are outlined below. To schedule an audition time, please submit the 'New Member Audition Application Form' online and our Executive Director will contact you. For current WYO members, please submit the 'Placement Audition Request.' 

All auditions, both new members and current member placement auditons will be held on August 24, 2024. Location will be at the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. 
Please request a makeup with the Executive Director if this date does not work with your schedule.


WYO is currently accepting audition requests for the 2024-2025 season.

Symphony:
Requirements:
Scales: 

  • Strings: Please prepare 2 scales of your choice spanning 3 octaves. Include one major scale, one minor scale, and between 2 and 4 accidentals. We strongly encourage you to choose challenging scales that demonstrate your proficiency. Scales must be memorized.

  • Brass & Winds: Please prepare 2 octaves of scales of your choice. Similar to strings, we encourage selecting challenging scales to showcase your proficiency. Scales must be memorized.

Prepared Solo Pieces:

  • Students should prepare one 2-3 minute excerpt of their choice showing technical and musical abilities. The excerpt may include pieces from a standard concerto, sonata, etude, or other technical works. Memorization is not required.


No sightreading .

Strings Orchestras:
Requirements:
Scales: Students are to prepare 2 major scales of the student's choice (1,2, or 3 octaves).
 
Prepared Solo Pieces: Students should prepare one 3 minute solo piece of their choosing that best demonstrates their ability. Memorization is not required.
 
Audition Excerpt:  No excerpts required.
 
Sightreading: Students will be given a short sight-reading excerpt during the audition.

Junior Concert Band and Wind Ensemble:
Requirements:
Scales: Students are to prepare  2 major scales of the student's choice (1,2, or 3 octaves).
 
Prepared Solo Pieces: Students should prepare one 3 minute solo piece of their choosing that best demonstrates their ability. Memorization is not required.
 
Sightreading: Students will be given a short sight-reading excerpt during the audition.
