History of WYO

Since its establishment in 1995, the Williamsburg Youth Orchestra (WYO) has been dedicated to providing orchestral opportunities for students in the greater Williamsburg region. Founded by Nancy Canning and Elnore Andersen in collaboration with the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra (WSO), WYO's inaugural concert in 1996 marked the beginning of its enriching  journey under the baton of Fran Goldman. Over the years, WYO flourished, expanding its programs and collaborations with directors like Reed Perkins, Davidson Burgess, Jeffrey Phelps, and from the faculty of the College of William & Mary's Music Department, Akiko Fujimoto and Paul Bhasin. Initiatives such as the WYO Student Ambassador program and the Junior Concert Band and Wind Ensemble furthered its impact. With support from generous donors and grants, WYO's growth has been steady, reaching a membership of 117 students by the season ending 2023-2024. Its close partnership with WSO facilitated numerous educational endeavors, including biennial Side-by-Side concerts and workshops. Celebrating over 27 years of nurturing a love for orchestral music, WYO remains committed to its mission, supported by WSO and other benefactors, as it looks forward to continuing its journey of musical enrichment in the Williamsburg community.
